December 10, 2017 Japanese Beekeepers visits B.E.E.S. Association at Vergara Family's Apiary at Lapu-Lapu City, they were into commercial beekeeping maintaining 2000 hives/colonies of bees, they want to know what are the diseases and problems that Cebuano beekeepers often encounter as we exchange ideas on how they keep bees in Japan and how we keep the bees here in Cebu, that is how beekeepers should be, sharing thoughts and ideas for the good of everyone.
December 22, 2017 I received a package containing a letter of thanks with honey from Nishitarumizu Bee Farm, Japan. It is a pleasure to meet beekeepers. To Bee Or Not To Bee? is the title of an article from Sunstar newspaper wherein I was featured in a full page article, I was interviewed by Jenara Regis Newman, but due to lot of technical terms in beekeeping the article needs to be corrected since it was the worker bees who stings and not the drones because drones does not have a stinger but all is good, I need to thank Sunstar Newspaper for this article so people would be aware that bees are important to our environment. Below was the link of the article:
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cebu/lifestyle/2016/10/02/bee-or-not-bee-beekeepers-story-501043 B.E.E.S. Association was featured at Matanglawin in their episode in which the subject of it were Bees, it was shoot at Vergara's residence which we consider as our headquarters for our group, it is also known as Mactan Beefarm locally, the host were OJ and Blinky who were also hosts from a local tv show called MAG TV.
It was June 8, 2016, Wednesday when I received a call from Mag TV Na! a local show in Cebu on a well known TV station ABS-CBN. Mag TV Na! is a local telamagazine show that showcases Cebu’s culture and its people. The shows content include stories of places of interest, lifestyle, homemaker tips, fashion, food, health and wellness. Stories of hope and empowerment as well as advocacies that rouse interest to move forward. It was June 9, 2016 when the interview happened, they came at exactly 9am that morning, It was Borgie Cabigas the host of Mag TV Na! who interviewed me. The show featured my photos, as I started beekeeping because of a single picture that I captured while taking photos of bees, the interview started from there and went on as the host ask me on what made me decide to keep bees I told them how important the bees were in our environment, it was the bees that taught me to believe in creation, that there is a God who created everything. I Searched wikipedia and google the existence of Flowers and bees according to evolution theory, and this is what I found out: The first flowering plants known to exist are from 160 million years ago and according to evolutionary believers they diversified enormously during the Lower Cretaceous and became wide spread around 120 million years ago, and bee fossil records dated back only about 65 million years. The big question is how could the flowering plant survive for about 50-60 million years when there's nothing around to pollinate them. Isaiah 55:8 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. This verse is God's way of saying that He is mysterious and we have to live with it. One of the main message I brought in the interview was how important the bees are in pollinating plants and trees, they are the best pollinators around naturally, without them fruits and vegetables will not be possible. I was also asked by the host on what are the difficulties in keeping bees, I answered him that one of the difficult stage we experienced was during dearth period where varroa mites are abundant, these mites were considered parasites for the bees, el niño was also considered a problem during the honeyflow season where we only harvested a few because plants die because of drought, compared to the previous years of honeyflow we've exp[erienced drought was really a problem to consider and it affects their forage. I was asked by the host what are the requirements in beekeeping and I answered him that it takes courage, passion and love inorder to become a beekeeper, one of the major requirements on where to place the bees were also asked by the host and I answered him that the colonies were placed in an area were the bees can freely fly around to forage, and during night time colonies must not be placed on a direct light since they might mistook it as a morning light and they will suffer fatigue, the host also asked me to describe my relationshiop with the bees and I told them, I thank God for the wisdom that I received to know the bees, for most people have fear for the bees, but if you have wisdom in knowing them you will see how important they are to our environment, people fear the bees for their sting but when honybee stings they die, it is painful to experience stings but if you know the bees they sting because they are protecting the colony, just like the warrior code "Sacrifice oneself so that others may live." knowing the bees will make you learn lots of things, it will take your fear out for them, and if they believe in karma you are already helping the plants and the trees and not only that animals depend on the plants and the trees and so are we, and honey have medicinal benefits for us, bees are life giving creature as the host says they are part of the cycle of life. and as of June 12, 2016, Sunday it was aired. here's the advertisement link for that episode: https://www.facebook.com/magtv.na.1/videos/10154192549278788/ B.E.E.S. Association held it's 2nd. general assembly at Redemptoristine Nuns Monastery at Lahug, Cebu City on April 9, 2016, it was an annual meeting of beekeepers all over Visayas and Mindanao to exchange knowledge and experiences in managing bees and set 5 years directions of the association. Major events include the speaches of international beekeepers like Mr. Stephen Bastida and Patricia Jubay Paradero as well as sustainable beekeeping as handed by Mr. Alberto Bartolata. Adding spice to the Assembly is the presentation of Accomplishments of the Association Leaders and discussion and categorizing the members of the association. B.E.E.S. Association is Privileged to held it's yearly event in celebration of the only active beekeepers association in the Visayas. Margaret Wilson is a beekeeper from Australia, we had series of email that she's going to visit Cebu, on June 6, 2015 she visited the apiary along with her family, I gave her instruction on how to get here and said to her that our apiary was near a chapel at Kagudoy, Basak, Lapu-lapu City, but they went straight ahead to another chapel, it was sister Jessila, a nun who was based at a chapel in Indiana Aerospace University who accompanied them here in our apiary. We had a chat during their visit about beekeeping and sister Jessila shared her experience during the Typhoon Haiyan in Tacloban, Leyte, she was there during the tragedy, hearing her story was heartbreaking... Margaret Wilson and her family bought a bottle of honey from me and gave it to sister Jessila, she said to sister Jessila that it was not coincidence that we all have met here in our apiary because it was meant to happen. Below was some of the pictures that we've got during their visit.
last June 23, 2015 the weather bureau officially announced the onset of rainy season, and I still have to harvest the surplus honey yet and leave enough honey for the bees for this rainy season, I'm just waiting for the right time for the sun to show up, leaving the bees with honey on rainy season have an upsides like there are less robbing, less brood diseases and a healthier more balanced ecosystem in the hive. Bees are aggressive on rainy season maybe because a lot of moisture in the hive may endanger them . It is already rainy season and yet I still can see flowers blooming from the trees guess it is still a good sign that they can still forage nectar and pollen for the hive although dearth period is already near. Bees still fly even if it is raining and it appears they can tell the difference between a light rain that will keep going and a storm coming in. Bees can detect changes in air pressure. If it's going to rain and air pressure drops, they stay in their hives. Some bees may fly back to their hives when a rain starts, but most bees will not leave their hives when it is raining. If the rain is too heavy, they are unable to fly. Rainy season is also not a good time for those who have a colony with virgin queens, for the mating flight may be unsuccessful due to the rain, virgin queen may not come back, or might result to a drone layer queen.
April 18, 2015 we are scheduled to visit our fellow beekeepers apiary our beekeeping mentor Stephen Jamio Bastida joined us with Jezrael Vergara who is with his classmate who want to witness our checking and honey harvesting, first stop was the Redemptoristine Nuns Apiary, we just had a quick check in their apiary, Sister Alice also showed us the wax they had harvested and told us that they harvested around 7 Liters of honey on their fist harvest, we had our soya drink refreshments which was also a product that they are producing in their monastery and after that we had our lunch at Labangon for we are scheduled to visit Doc Alex Bautista's Farm at San Fernando, Cebu. We spent the whole afternoon at Bautista's farm, checking the hives, cleaning the hives, and harvesting honey, it was a very hot and humid afternoon, and we had some coconut refreshments in their farm, last stop was Allan Defensor's Apiary I guess it is already 6pm when we arrived there, Jezrael and his classmate have to go home, me and Stephen Bastida had a beer with Allan Defensor and Christian Maningo and we call it a day after several bottles. here's some pictures that I got during our visits...
Meet Jun, I met him through his sister Mrs. Gloria Hunter, they are new to beekeeping, they ordered a hive box from me, that is how we've met. Mrs. Gloria Hunter's husband is from Iowa, USA. Jun attended a seminar from our Beekeeping Association in Mactan and they bought their hives from Gaga a beekeeper who is from Lilo-an, Cebu. Jun works in a construction company through an agency and her sister would like to help him to be a beekeeper, Mrs. Gloria hunter asked me if I would like to assist his brother in beekeeping because based on what she said the bees are already bearding and the deep hive is overflowing with bees, early morning today I went to their place just right behind the waterfront Hotel in Cebu City, I just did a basic manipulation so that the bees would make a new comb on a frame and put those combs full of honey in the honey super, the honey super was just the same size as the deep hive as seen in photo, while inspecting I also cut an excess burr comb and gave it to his brother, since Mrs. Gloria had a cough and I told her brother to gave the honey to her and earlier I also told her that a combination of honey and apple cider is a good cure for a cough I learned this through my grandfather. While inspecting the other hive which they said was weak, I found a little egg and a little brood in the frames and also found out that there are signs that a virgin queen had exited thus the swarming of the bees, that is why only a little bees were left in the hive, and that answers the question why the other hive is weak, my day in their apiary ended up eating a typical merienda. |
